Pilot Light’s new single says the world’s a mess - fancy a dance?

Luxembourg rockers Pilot Light turn modern-day misery into an indie-rock party with “So Much Worse”. It’s proof that you can, in fact, dance while everything goes to hell.
Sometimes, the world needs a good talking to, sometimes, it needs a good guitar riff, and sometimes, it needs both at the same time.
Pilot Light with their new single 'So Much Worse' landed on 16 October, delivering a dose of high-energy indie rock with a lyrical outlook about as sunny as a Luxembourg winter afternoon.
Led by frontman and songwriter Ethan Carey, the Luxembourg outfit serves up bouncing guitars, infectious grooves and a hefty helping of early-2000s indie nostalgia. It’s music that gets your feet moving before your brain catches up with what the lyrics are actually saying.
Beneath those catchy hooks and upbeat rhythms lies a darker story of modern disillusionment, institutional deceit, superficial distractions and a world seemingly determined to make everything worse. So it’s cheery stuff, then! 😉
Dark thoughts, happy feet
The magic of 'So Much Worse' lies in its musical contradiction. While the guitars practically beg you to throw yourself into a sweaty indie-disco dance, the lyrics take a rather less optimistic look at the state of things.
It’s a deliberate move for Ethan, who says the idea of pairing dark subject matter with upbeat music has fascinated him since childhood.
“I am a massive fan of contrasts in music,” he explains, pointing to Hollywood Undead’s single “Bullet” as an early inspiration for the approach. “I really fell in love with the idea of lyrical content being totally at odds with the overall sound of the music, and that track and overall ethos were a huge inspiration when I went about writing and arranging this track". That contrast gives “So Much Worse” its bite. Rather than drowning in doom and gloom, Pilot Light turn it into something punchy, immediate and made for a crowd to shout along to.
If the world's going to pieces, you might as well have a decent soundtrack.
Straight to the riff, no messing about
Pilot Light have built their sound around energetic, guitar-driven alternative rock, combining memorable melodies with sharp-edged songwriting. 'So Much Worse' pushes that formula further, drawing on the infectious bounce of British indie rock from the early 2000s while keeping its lyrical gaze firmly fixed on the darker corners of modern life.
The band’s approach is refreshingly direct: big hooks, driving guitars and no unnecessary hanging around before getting to the good stuff.
It’s a sound that makes sense for a group with its sights set on the live stage. Following festival appearances and a recent tour of Portugal, Pilot Light are continuing to build momentum.
And there’s more to come. The band will join fellow Luxembourg rockers SUPERDRIVE at Rockhal on 28 October for a Rocklab Live Session, giving fans a chance to catch their energetic sound in action.
If you’re in the mood to contemplate the state of humanity or simply need something to blast through your headphones on the way to work, 'So Much Worse' has you covered. Just don't expect it to improve your outlook on the world.
