If you’ve been following the Luxembourgish music circuit lately, you’ve likely felt the heat from Pilot Light. After bursting onto the scene with their high-octane debut "I’ll Show You Pain", a track that became known for its playful video featuring a gorilla chasing the band around Lux City on a vel’OH, they are back with a release today, 30 January, of their second single, "Fake It."
While their debut was a punchy exploration of the fine line between love and hate, "Fake It" sees the band sharpening their claws. It’s a blistering critique of the "shortcut" era, targeting the curated facades of social media and the industry's obsession with overnight sensations.
Originally formed as a trio, Pilot Light has evolved into a formidable five-piece. The lineup now features Ethan Carey, Tomas Lenz, Cyril Yabroudi, Vanessa Cicognani, and Luca Daresta. This expansion has only deepened their sound, which masterfully blends 90s alternative grit with the sharp, soaring hooks of modern indie.
The soul of the song
Frontman and songwriter Ethan Carey doesn’t mince words when describing the inspiration behind the new track. "Serving as a blistering critique of industry facade, 'Fake It' targets the 'overnight sensations' and the timid copycats who trade integrity for trends," Carey explains. "In a landscape dominated by online pretension, it stands as a defiant anthem for those committed to the slow-burn of craftsmanship and the raw reality of lived experience."
Despite the heavy themes, the track is built for the stage. Carey notes that it’s a song that "really connects with people live," balancing its philosophical weight with the kind of heavy grooves that have already made the band a standout at festivals like Rock Justice and Blues Express.
In true indie fashion, the band didn't need a massive budget to create a visual impact. The music video for "Fake It" is a masterclass in garage-built creativity.
"If you check out our music video, you probably would not realise we shot it entirely in our garage," Carey says. "We used cigarette smoke and deodorant spray to produce all the various pyro and smoke effects. It was the definition of DIY and we loved the result."
Where to hear it
"Fake It" is available now on several platforms, including Spotify and YouTube. Whether you’re looking for a workout anthem or a middle finger to your Instagram feed, this is the track for your Friday playlist.
