PUPILAS: Two Luxembourg clubs, three DJs, one new video
What happens when the music takes over? For Leo Lopez, Diego Veira and Groovy Huv, the answer is PUPILAS, a new music video that dives headfirst into Luxembourg’s nightlife, with a healthy dose of lasers, smoke, surrealism and supernatural energy thrown into the mix.
The video officially dropped on 20 September, following a special preview screening at Mesa Verde on 18 September, where the team came together with the public for an evening of music, visuals and behind-the-scenes stories.
From the club floor to the screen
Electronic music is already a big part of Luxembourg's nightlife, but music videos are still relatively rare on the local scene. PUPILAS aims to change that, turning the club experience into something much more cinematic.
Directed by photographer and filmmaker Vito Labalestra, the project was created together with the three DJs, with creative direction and design from his daughter Elena Labalestra. Production came courtesy of HAVE Films.
The result is a visual trip through two venues that mean a lot to the artists: Mesa Verde and De Gudde Wëllen.
For Leo, Diego and Groovy Huv, these are places connected to their own journeys as DJs, packed with memories, nights out and stories from Luxembourg's club scene. So PUPILAS is also a little love letter to the places where those adventures happened.
Enter the night...
At the centre of the video is a shy young woman who gradually gets pulled into the irresistible force of the music.
What starts as hesitation turns into something much stranger, almost supernatural. As the sound takes hold, she is forced to confront her emotions and fears before finally letting go and surrendering to the music.
Visually it’s all about dynamic lighting, lasers, smoke and surreal body movement. So basically, the club experience turned up several notches.
The shoot took place over two days in April, bringing together a 15-person crew working across costumes, make-up and lighting, alongside 13 actors led by dancer Nora Noush.
Three DJs, three flavours
The trio behind PUPILAS each bring their own flavour to the project.
Leo Lopez, originally from Colombia and based in Luxembourg since 2010, is a DJ and producer who has held residencies at venues including Mesa Verde and De Gudde Wëllen. He began releasing his own productions in 2018 and has also performed with Luxembourg's Ultraschall Collective.
Diego Veira, originally from Bogotá, has been DJing and producing since 2011, moving between house, deep house, minimal, dark disco and indie dance. He also founded Bogotá club Sala Terracota in 2022 and has performed internationally with Acido Pantera at festivals including Glastonbury, Fusion, Sziget and Les Transmusicales.
And then there's Groovy Huv, who splits his time between Luxembourg and Zurich and moves effortlessly between groovy house, funk and indie dance. A member of Ultraschall Collective and Luv & dBeat, his philosophy is refreshingly simple: whatever the style, the aim is to get people moving.
